The Leaning Tower of Bologna may fall

La Garisenda is one of the two famous towers of Bologna. Just like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the 12th-century building has long leaned slightly, but now it's starting to lean too dangerously. The square around the tower, Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, was closed last month for security reasons.
"I think we need at least twenty million euros for restoration, maybe more," says Mayor Matteo Lepore.
The mayor promises only major repairs.
The 48-meter-high Garisenda, which stands next to the twice-higher Assinelli tower (97.2 meters), is tilted by four degrees. For comparison, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (55 meters) is tilted by 3.9 degrees.
It is planned to build a metal structure around the tower in the near future to protect the surrounding area in the event of a collapse. The first containers have already arrived. After that, you need to make major repairs. According to the mayor, fundraising is going "very well." "We have already collected 1.5 million euros, local companies are donating significant amounts."
The Asinelli Tower is also closed to the public at this time.
